A Tale Told
Of Brazilian Cities

LEWIS ERIC LACHTER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Starting at

A

Jewish vacation in Brazil
is basically a tale of two
cities: the beach/play-
ground community of Rio
de Janiero and the busy metrop-
olis of Sao Paulo.
The language of the country is
Portuguese, not Spanish. But if
you play your cards right, you will
also hear some Hebrew, a smat-
tering ofYiddish and a lot of Eng-
lish.
Brazil is immense, and much
of it is uninhabited. But that is
not the case with these two cities
— especially Sao Paulo. With
twice the population of New York
City, Sao Paulo's 15 million peo-
ple live in a bustling beehive.
The Jewish community num-
bers 60,000, the largest in the
country. Sao Paulo supports
many synagogues. One claims a
membership of 2,000 congre-
gants.

More down to earth is the fa-
mous Sao Paulo Zoo, and art
lovers will want to visit the
Musee de Arte de Sao Paulo. You
will see the works of Brazilian
artists as well as European mas-
ters.
When you have your fill of
Brazilian cityscapes, a complete
change of scene is yours in the
sea, sand and excitement of Rio
de Janerio.
The Latin beat is in the air.
The sea is intoxicating. The
bathing suits (men's and
women's) on the Copacabana and
Ipanema beaches startle even
those who imagine themselves
blase.
Rio's 30,000 Jews love the sea,
and the city's rabbis have a hard
time getting congregations to shul
on Saturday morning. But Fri-
day evening services are well at-
tended.

Three major Jewish sights to
see are Hebraica, the Albert Ein-
stein Hospital and the Home for
the Aged.
Hebraica is a club that offers
four restaurants, three swim-
ming pools, tennis courts, a the-
ater and movie house, lecture
halls and gyms. One of the
restaurants, Buffet Mosaico,
served glatt kosher food.
The Albert Einstein Hospital
is an internationally renowned
facility, which features kosher
food for patients who come from
all over South America.
The Home for the Aged is con-
sidered a model for all such in-
stitutions around the world.
Sao Paulo, the financial and in-
dustrial heart of Brazil, is full of
souring skyscrapers and elegant
shops. If you want a breathtak-
ing view of the city, take the ele-
vator to the top of Edifico Italia,
the tallest building in South
America.

The hub of the Jewish com-
munity is Federacao Israelita do
Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Locat-
ed in downtown Rio (Rua Mexi-
co 90), the Federacao helps
tourists and coordinated the ac-
tivities of all aspects of Rio's Jew-
ish life, including synagogues,
schools, clubs, cultural, religious
and Zionist organizations.
One of the many synagogues
in Rio is called Temple A.R.I. (As-
sociato Religosa Israelita). This
temple is open to tourists during
the High Holidays and also wel-
comes visitors to its second night
Passover seder. If you are inter-
ested in participating in the
seder, you must make prior
arrangements.
An interesting downtown his-
toric landmark is the Grande
Templo Israelita. Built in 1932,
the temple was refurbished in
1985.
