As recipient of the 1995 Crys- tal Rose Award, selected by the Hospice of Southeastern Michi- gan Council, Morry showed again why he is such a well-loved hu- man being. He kissed people ... They kissed him ... Morry entertained with his trumpet solo and vocals, as he has done with trumpeter- friend Marcus Belgrave for the Hospice residents who thrill at the mention that Morry will be coming ... People with a termi- nal disease and a limited life ex- pectancy ... Men, women and children of all ages to whom Mor- ry Cohen is an angel ... their link to happiness during the remain- ing time. The 500 or so people who at- tended the recent 10th annual Crystal Rose Ball to applaud Morry were so very proud ... The privilege was an honor for them to be counted among those that came to recognize a humanitari- an who has enjoyed the smell of success as a major shopping cen- ter developer (Forbes Cohen) ... and is sharing it with his kindly deeds. The setting was most unusu- al but done without a hitch in two rooms with a large screen in each where podium ceremonies were viewed along with a video pre- sentation of Morry doing just some of his things for Hospice. For restaurateurs to take Sat- urday night off to attend, the per- son being honored must be very special ... Joe Muer, Joe Muer Seafood and Joe Muer's Grill; Sam Locriccio, Arriva; Mark L2r- co, Larco's; and Chris An- gelosante, Appe'teasers ... Also Doug Grech, former Duglass Du- glass boss/chef; Murray Liber- man of yesteryears' Liberman's Delicatessen; and Frank Stella who, with brother Joe, do so much eatery supplying. Passed hors d'oeuvres, sitdown dinner and wines at River Place, with Jimmy Schmidt coordina- tion, were excellent ... looked over by Stuart Lichtenstein and Roseanne McGraw, a couple of his right-hand man and woman assistants. The true abundance of Morry's many humanitarian deeds has yet to be fully chronicled. AFTER 12 years, Nicky's of Troy on W. Big Beaver has called it quits ... Nick Sorise and John hey Reaser's restaurant-nitery that closes tomorrow night follows in the footsteps of previous opera- tions at the spot: Bonaventure, Kogy's and Sydney's ... New restaurant to try its luck there will be Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. hinges, new hoods & hinges in- stalled on 6-way door reach-in cooler, handles secured in place, strings removed and shelves clean and sanitized, new garbage disposal installed, Silver King let- tuce crisper installed with new Morry Cohen: Hospice volunteer. WHAT PRICE sensational- ism? ... How about a decent restaurateur's reputation? ... An error in judgment by a local tele- vision station recently showed an old tape of MacKinnon's restau- rant in Northville, and mistak- enly said Tom's place had been given a 67 score instead of 77 by the Wayne County Health De- partment. It happened during a newscast with the channel telling of seven members of the Birmingham Restaurant Collection association meeting with Oakland County Supervisor L. Brooks Patterson and heads of the Health Depart- ment to voice their concerns about not getting a fair shake. The tape of MacKinnon's from the station's last fiasco should be dead and buried ... I'm looking right at two sheets of paper ... One showing Tom MacKinnon's place being scored with a 77, not 67 ... and another where all the necessary corrections were made. Here are the "violations" since taken care of by MacKinnon's af- ter the April 1995 report ... just a couple of things that have any- thing whatsoever to do with health ... The recent health in- spection reads, "All coolers con- tained an easily readable conspicuous thermometer. All items written under #14 and #15 have been corrected: (cabinet door has been repaired with new parts). All new plumbing in- stalled in dish machine room — no leaks. New 16 mesh screen in- stalled on back doors. Installed new light and slip tube and end cap." Incidentally, MacKinnon's is rated among the nations top 250 restaurants. VINO PICKS ... by Roger Petri, director of operations at Mac & Rays ... Stone Street Chardonnay, 1991, a wonderful, rich, medium-bodied Sonoma chardonnay with hints of buttery oak. Honey rich fruit on the palate and pleasant lingering fin- ish. Great with grilled salmon or veal. Retails at about $16 ... Ridge Mataro (Mouvedre) Evan- gelo Vineyard, 1991, a pure win- ner. One can never go wrong with arguably California's best single vineyard wine producer. Earthy, intense and smokey, full of fruit with a spicy finish. A great ac- companiment for wild game. Su- per value at about $14. LOVERS OF those soft shell crabs are going ga-ga over them being in season now ... Fran O'Brien's Maryland Crabhouse on South Opdyke in Auburn Hills gets the live soft shell crabs trucked in every Monday and Thursday from the docks of Chesapeake Bay ... Most important, owner Dan Dunsky has them prepared in the tradi- tional Chesapeake Bay style ..
