too young to see such sights."
However, sometimes the
thoughts hurt, and the youth, al-
ready at an early age, find them-
selves returning home with very
painful questions.
"For example, in the case
when I saved the life of the el-
derly woman, I wondered if I re-
ally saved her or if I actually
caused her damage. Actually, af-
ter I see so many injuries and
bodies I think we are so small.
Our daily problems dwarf next

go home, I return to normalcy
with the daily problems that
trouble people of my age."
On the subject of euthanasia,
she hasn't yet formulated an
opinion. The satisfaction follow-
ing saving a life clashes fre-
quently with the fact "that
sometimes it only hurts and caus-
es pain to the patient who con-
tinues to live by artificial life
support."
She is aware that is a very dif-
ficult decision.
"There is always hope and
miracles can always happen," she
says.

she manned five shifts. And
that's routine. Most of the calls

You should avoid foods high in

transported to the hospital. Also,
the many road accidents result
in frequent calls to the location.
The other incidents: suicides,
sickness and injuries.
"It's true we like the action in
serious incidents, but if, for ex-
ample, I was on a quiet shift, I
would never feel that it wasn't
worthwhile. I don't feel let down
if there's no action. There has
never been an occasion when I
didn't go out with the team be-
cause it concerned an accident in-
volving a slightly injured person
or an elderly person who had to
be transferred to the hospital,"
she says.
Has it ever happened that
Karen arrived on the scene with
her team and found out that the
case concerned a member of her
family or relative?
"Yes, it happened and it was
very difficult," she says. "Two
years ago we were called to at-
tend to a serious injury resulting
from a road accident. A youth
was lying on the road, his face
was covered in blood. His arm
was totally out of place and there
were cuts all over his body.
"Only after several minutes I
identified him as one of my class-
mates. At that moment I was
shocked. It was the first time that
I personally knew one of my pa-
tients. However, I didn't go into
shock. The opposite. I went into
high motivation." ❑
