Israel's Youth Lend Help
To Magen-David-Adorn

DORIT GABBAY SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Karen Noah, 18, volunteers for MDA.

aren Noah, 18, of Tel Aviv,
was at home with her
boyfriend when she heard
on the radio about a ter-
rorist attack on Dizengoff Street.
That was some five months ago.
She didn't think twice and im-
mediately rushed to the Tel Aviv
Magen-David-Adom first-aid sta-
tion. Karen has volunteered at
the station for three years. She
knew they needed her there as
quickly as possible and so she
didn't wait for the telephone call.

boyfriend and be on the spot."

disaster sunk in and I started to
shudder. After a few minutes I

teams.
"The wounded had already
been evacuated to the hospitals
and what remained to be done
was to load the ambulances with
polythene bags containing dis-
membered limbs and to transfer
them to the Pathology Institute
at Abu Kabir. We were there un-
til the evening."
At night she couldn't sleep.
The tears burst through the bar-
rier of distress.
"Suddenly I had the time and
quiet to recall all that had hap-
pened that day, and then I start-
ed to cry. At the scene I was
occupied and the whole time I
only thought how I could help
someone. I really didn't have
enough time to absorb what I
witnessed," she says.
Karen is one of 3,000 youth
ages 15 to 18 from all over the
country who volunteer at Magen-
David-Adorn, Israel's rescue unit.
They do everything: resuscita-
tion, evacuate the injured and
administer first aid. Only a
month ago, Livnat Elkayam, 17,
an MDA volunteer in the north
of the country, was called to as- c/
sist a woman who was about to
give birth. In the end, Livnat had
to deliver the baby by herself.
