Leland Babitch
David Fromm, M.D.
Leland Babitch, a fourth-year
student at Wayne State Univer-
sity School of Medicine, has re-
ceived the 1995 American
Medical Association-Glaxo
Achievement Award for out-
standing leadership in the med-
ical field. This award was
presented to 25 students from
medical schools throughout the
United States at the American
Medical Association's conference
in Washington, D.C., held in
March.
Mr. Babitch was active in the
medical-school student govern-
ment at Wayne and served as ed-
itor of the yearbook. He also
played a prominent role in ex-
panding the medical capabilities
of the Cass Corridor Free Clinic.
After graduation in June, Mr.
Babitch will join the staff at St.
Louis Children's Hospital in St.
Louis, Mo., as a pediatric resi-
dent.

involved in research in gastroin-
testinal physiology, especially the
function of gastric mucosal sure
face cells. He graduated from the'
University of California School
of Medicine and was a research
fellow in surgery at Harvard
Medical School and Beth Israel
Hospital from 1967 to 1969.
Dr. David Fromm, Penberthy
professor and chairman of the de-
partment of surgery at Wayne
State University School of Med-
icine and the chief of the depart-
ment of surgery at Harper
Hospital, has been elected to a
six-year term as a member of the
board of directors of the Ameri-
can Board of Surgery. Member-
ship is drawn from 18 national
and regional surgical specialties
and organizations.
Dr. Fromm is surgeon-in-chief
at the Detroit Medical Center
and vice present of University
Physicians Inc., Wayne State
University's faculty practice plan.
He also is a trustee of the DMC.
Dr. Fromm is recognized for
his expertise in gastroenterology
and has clinical interest in gas-
trointestinal as well as hepatic
Dr. Michael Nathanson, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard
Nathanson of West Bloomfield,
is being promoted to associate
professor of medicine at Yale Uni-
versity School of Medicine in New
Haven, Conn. Dr. Nathanson
also is being promoted to asso-
ciate professor in the department
of cell biology at Yale, where he
has a joint appointment. Dr.
Nathanson came to Yale in 1988
as a postdoctoral fellow in diges-
tive diseases. He currently con-,
ducts liver research and practice,
gastroenterology.
