This award was established to honor individuals who, by their actions and through their lead- ership, have worked to affirm the noblest aspects of ecumenism and American democracy. Car- dinal Maida's selection for this honor is based on his stands against anti-Semitism, racism and all forms of bigotry and discrimination. He is only the fifth person in the country to be so hon- ored. The Cardinal has made calls for ecumenism and statements against anti-Semitism. His ac- tivities as a member of ADL's Holocaust Education Coalition, his activities fostering positive Christian-Jewish relations in Poland, and his regular appearances at congregations and in in- terfaith and Catholic-Jewish activities all point to his mission to combat prejudice and pro- mote understanding.
