high-school students were given
the option of a video production
class.
Bright and funny, the videos
the teens produced teach Hebrew
by using clever sayings or intro-
duce the concept of Shabbat.
Lisa Stem, teacher of that first
class and a local video producer,
said while some teens blew off the
work, others took to working with
the medium and learned a lot
from the class. When their Mon-
day night class demanded more
from them, some of her students
committed extra time to projects,
giving up Sunday afternoons to
shoot the videos.

some of the students, Ms. Stern
found she often was competing

Education contest.

with other after-school activities
such as sports or drama.
"Some of them definitely would
be interested," she said. "But it
is difficult to get kids interested
in Monday night school much
less devoting extra time."
Sari Cicurel expects this will
happen with the teens who vol-
unteer when the program begins
late this summer. But she hopes
to start with a large group of
teens so when sports and other
commitments arise, there will
still be a core group of teen-agers
working on the project.
"This is something the kids
will do in their spare time and we
have a large group of kids with
no spare time," she said. ❑

Children's Choir
Plans Concert

The Chicago Children's Choir
will perform at the Community
House in Birmingham on June
28, at 7:30 p.m., as part of a na-
tional tour.
The Chicago Children's Choir
is a multi-racial, multi-cultural
children's choir dedicated to
making a difference in young
people's lives through musical
excellence. The program provides
high quality musical education,
vocal skills development, and
performance opportunities for
young people ages 4 to 18.
The concert will be followed by
an afterglow for performers and

adults and $2 for children and
