CONSERVATIVES page 17
Conservative movement, the em-
phasis is to open lines of com-
munication for potential converts
and their families. For example,
the caller is given a choice of sev-
eral pamphlets on everything
from how to talk to a prospective
non-Jewish spouse about con-
version to how parents can re-
spond effectively to interdating.
"This is a very new and re-
freshing approach to outreach.
The Conservative movement
feels a need to respond to the sta-
tistics (that an estimated 50 per-
cent of Jews marry gentiles) and
what they mean to the continu-
ity of the Jewish people," Mr.
Asher said.
For years, the Reform move-
ment has led the charge of wel-
coming intermarried couples and
offering informational programs
geared both toward conversion
and mutual respect when no con-
version is to occur. Nearly every
temple in the Detroit area offers
an "Introduction to Judaism"
class for potential converts and
intermarrying couples.
Pamphlets and
answers are offered
on the 1-800 line.
On a national level, the Con-
servative movement is doing
more active outreach to the in-
termarried, offering conversion
classes at the regional level and
developing informational, multi-
lingual pamphlets. Some con-
gregations in other parts of the
country offer free or subsidized
education to the children of in-
termarried couples, said Dr. Anne
Lapidus Lerner of Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary.
No Conservative rabbi will per-
form an intermarriage.
"This is not a theological
change for us," Rabbi Silverstein
said. "We are opening the lines of
communication."
In Detroit, one conversion class
is offered through the local Con-
servative synagogues. Local rab-
bis sponsor conversion candidates
who attend a 16-week class that
is taught by Rabbi David Nelson
at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Another outreach program,
Stepping Stones, is sponsored
jointly by the Conservative and
Reform congregations. The goal
of that family-education program
is for the participants to affiliate
with a congregation. Cl
