Domestic Violence:
Is There Progress?

`.;

JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER

he first time Rebecca
walked into Jewish Fami-
ly Service (JFS), she felt a
sense of relief. It was the
first time people were willing to
listen as she talked of her expe-
riences in an abusive marriage.
It's not that others didn't be-
lieve her, but the idea of a Jew-
ish man abusing his wife seemed
unthinkable to many who think
Jews are immune to such vio-
lence.
The fact of the matter is Jews
are just as likely as anyone else
to be involved in a domestic-vio-
lence situation, believed to be the
most common but least reported
crime in America, according to
the National Woman Abuse Pre-

four women a day are killed by
their husbands or partners.

bayit — the peaceful household
— as a reason why women
should stay in an abusive rela-
tionship.
As a cooperative effort, both or-
ganizations run Safe Place, an
apartment with a kosher kitchen
where battered women and their
children can seek temporary shel-
ter. The apartment, established
in 1993, is at an undisclosed lo-
cation.
Raising community awareness
is key to dispelling the notion that
domestic violence doesn't affect
Jews. NCJW sends trained vol-
unteers into the community to
build awareness. In addition, JFS
is holding its second Stocker Lec-
ture, a community-wide event
which brings in a national speak-
er to discuss current family is-
sues. On May 24, Christina
Crawford, an advocate for the
rights of women and children,
will discuss "From Violence to
Healing" at the Applebaum Par-
enting Center in West Bloom-
field.
