INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SERVICE

10 Days Israel from $1329

Point, the former outsiders were
admitted, if only to ensure
enough men for the morning
minyons.
Today, the Great Synagogue is
used for services only on the Sab-
bath and the High Holy Days, but
the sanctuary and the museum
remain open on Tuesday and
Thursdays, 2-5 p.m., and on Sun-
days 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
The center of Jewish gravity
has shifted, however, to Sea
Point, where most of Cape Town's
20,000 Jews now reside. It is, at
least to the eye of the casual ob-
server, a virtually all-white sanc-
tuary of villas, high-rise
apartments, oceanfront prome-
nades, expensive shops, elegant
boutiques and even two kosher
restaurants, both highly recom-
mended.
Winds of change are blowing
through Sea Point, and Jewish
leaders are welcoming them.
Shortly after his election last
April, Nelson Mandela was in-
vited to deliver a first address to
"the Jews of South Africa" from
the bimah of the Green and Sea
Point Synagogue, the largest in
the Southern Hemisphere.
He appealed to South Africa
Jews living overseas to return:
'We want those who left because
of insecurity (under apartheid) to
come back and to help us to build."
Mr. Mandela noted that, from
his prison cell on Robben Island
just off the coast of Sea Point, he
could see the Sea Point Syna-
gogue: "I never dreamed that one
day I would be here in the sanc-
tuary, addressing the congrega-
tion."
In greeting Mandela, Ameri-
can-born Rabbi E.J. Steinhorn,
spiritual head of the congrega-
tion, declared, "In peace we wit-
ness and welcome the birth of a
new, democratic South Africa."
Meeting with a group of Jew-
ish passengers from the Orient
Cruise Line's Marco Polo, Rabbi
Steinhorn explained that South
African Jews, traditionally, have
been "liberal democratic," and
Jewish consituencies like Sea
Point have elected Jewish mem-
bers of Parliament, like Colin
Eglin, who belonged to the De-
mocratic Party.
The journey to Cape Town was
an extraordinary experience, one
available to all travelers, com-
bining visits to places of both gen-
eral and specific Jewish interest
with meetings with fellow-Jews.
hi South Africa, they have had
a record of achievement for al-
most two centuries and, current-
ly, a record of support for human
decency. We should be proud of
them.
South African Airways, the na-
tional airline, flies non-stop from
New York to Johannesburg, from
Miami to Cape Town. Food and
service are superb, and the once-
.all-white hue of flight personnel
is becoming a mosaic of many col-
ors. El
