Benefit Recital
For Conservatory
Two musicians, violinist Mark
Lubotsky and pianist Vladislav
Kovalsky, will headline the
American premier of contempo-
rary composter Alfred Schnittke's
newest work, Sonata #3 for Vio-
lin and Piano, at a benefit recital
on Wednesday, May 17, at 7:30
p.m. at St. Hugo of the Hills in
Bloomfield Hills.
Proceeds from the recital ben-
efit the Southfield Conservatory
of Music to purchase a concert
piano for the Conservatory's
home at the new Southfield
Centre for the Arts.
Mr. Lubotsky, born in
Leningrad, began studying at age
seven at the Central School of
Music and later at the Moscow
Conservatory. He took prizes at
the Berlin Youth Festival,
Salzburg Macerate Competition
and Moscow Conservatory. He
took prizes at the Berlin Youth
Festival, Salzburg Macerate
Competition and Moscow Mozart
Competition, which lead to regu-
lar play and recording with lead-
ing Soviet orchestras, including
the Moscow Philharmonic.
Pianist Vladislav Kovalsky,
winner of first prize in the Na-
tional Russian Competition, was
born in eastern Russia to a fam-
ily of professonal musicians. Be-
ginning at the age of six, he
received traditional study and in-
tensive technical training. He
received his bachelor's degree
from Omsk College of Music,
where he studied with Professor
Ludmila Vinkler; and studied at
the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad
State Conservatory.
Tickets for the benefit are $15
for adults and $10 for students
