JET
JEWISH ENSEMBLE THEATRE
There aren't too many places
with the rice pudding as served
at Paparazzi ... a delicious mix-
ture of fresh fruit topped with
fresh raspberries.
The flames people see coming
from Paparazzi's kitchen isn't a
stove on fire ... Just brandy be-
ing flamed for a dish that may
call for it.
Steve's family pitches in to
help ... Wife, Olga, an interior de-
signer at Ford Motor Co., comes
Fridays and Saturdays and when
needed ... Weekends are almost
like being together at home for
the Stojanovski family ...
Daniela, 20, is hostess, waitress
and salad maker; Kerol, 16, is
hostess and also makes salads ...
Like Mike and Marian Bitch,
Steve is Macedonian and very
family oriented.
Table coverings are a lami-
nated print cloth and napkins a
burgundy linen at tables and
booths ... The interior look is a
bit like an Italian courtyard, with
tall columns topped by sconces
that resemble silver bowls.
It is open seven days a week
... Lunch Monday-Saturday,
11:30 to 2:30; dinner Monday -
Thursday, 4:30 to 10; Friday and
Saturday, 4:30-11; Sunday, 4:30
to 9.
Gourmet meals
and a children's
menu.
A separate wine menu has
vino available by glass or bottle
... Reservations are taken every
day except Friday and Saturday.
Good to see an Italian eating
spot where the menu is easy to
read and items so recognizable
for the customers.
And always good to see a
restaurant owner who loves his
work so much that grabbing a
knife and chopping food is like
enjoying his favorite pastime ...
Steve also waits tables, bartends,
cooks, and walks around talking
to people like they were old
friends ... It's nothing for him to
put in 70 hours a week and not
mind it ... His is a labor of love.
Steve collects old cameras, too
... They're for the restaurant
decor with its cameraman theme
... I've known some newspaper
photographers through the years
that he would have loved meet-
ing ... Especially the ones who'd
trade a used, beat-up camera for
some wine.
It may not seem the kind of
family restaurant one would be
accustomed to seeing ... but don't
forget, this is a true example of
how the family dining trend has
gone.
Paparazzi has gotten better
than it was before Steve took
over, and his first anniversary
this past April was a celebration
of sorts ... Not only for Steve, but
the owners of Sugar Tree, too.
It has become the kind of
restaurant they have always
wanted.
CONGRATS ... to Ray and
Shirley Abrams ... on their
47th anniversary ... to Allan
Schwartz, The Singing Window
Washer," on his 63rd birthday.
THE ONLY thing spicy is its
name .. Unless, of course, you like
your food this way ... In that
case, Siam Spicy on Northwest-
ern Highway between Middlebelt
and 14 Mile (former Waleed's
site), will gladly accommodate
you.
Thai food can be gotten any
way desired ... mild, medium or
hot ... And if you still want it
more spicy, there are condiments
on the table with which to do
your torrid stomach thing.
Otherwise, have no fear ...
Siam Spicy's Thai food, some of
which is not on a lot of menus
with this ethnic fare, is tastily
prepared to tingle the liking of
any taste bud.
MUST BE SOME kind of
record ... taking 27 first places in
the 27 dances Dee Shapiro com-
peted at recent 32nd annual De-
troit International Ball in Cobo
Hall ... The family room mantel
at her and plastic surgeon hub-
by, Dr. Marshall Shapiro's home,
has little room for anything but
her oodles of dance trophies ... 27
out of 27 ... Quite a feat.
ROMANCE IS still in the air
at Windsor's Blue Danube Hun-
garian restaurant as a father-
and-son duo from Budapest does
strolling melodies Thursday-Sat-
urday ... Blue Danube, on Ot-
tawa Street, seats 140 in two
rooms and is one of the few Hun-
garian restaurants that prides it-
self on healthful cooking ... Only
canola oil is used and all chicken
is boneless and skinless, with fat
boiled out before preparation ...
Same style of cooking is with oth-
er dishes.
NOT MUCH longer for reser-
vations to Northern High's lunch
reunion, noon, May 27 at Morel's
on Telegraph ... Call Iz or Fran
Malin, 661-0818; Anne Gonte
Silver, 647-3663; or Herb Carson,
855-3298.
ANNUAL GREEKTOWN
Art Fair by Greektown Mer-
chants Association, a fun-on-the-
street doing, is May 19-21 ... No
admission charge with over 125
artists and craftspeople.
BILLY ROSE Quartet at Ex-
calibur, on Franklin at North-
western and 12 Mile, plays
Tuesday-Saturday nights in a
complete month-of-May stint,
with return engagement taking
11 years for it to come back ...
Last time agreement was made
to play Excalibur dates back to
1984.
GOOD WAITER Dept. ...
Larry Hechler, son of Bob and
Loretta Hechler, at T. C. Lingui-
ni's in Radisson Plaza Town Cen-
ter ... very personable and
efficient. O
