Approval Sought
For Arms Sale
Washiongton (JTA) — The De-
partment of Defense has asked
Congress to approve a $416 mil-
lion sale of weapons to Israel.
Israel is seeking to buy 42 mul-
tiple-launch rocket systems and
about 2,640 Tow II anti-tank mis-
siles.
Although Congress has 20
days to pass legislation to block
the sale, no opposition is expect-
ed.
The missile launchers are de-
signed to rapidly fire warheads
into a concentrated area, accord-
ing to the Defense Department.
The Tow II anti-tank missiles are
designed to pierce armored vehi-
cles, including tanks, and are
usually fired from helicopters, de-
fense officials also said.
The funds for the sale will
come from the United States' an-
nual $1.8 billion in military aid
to Israel, according to officials.
Extremists Enter
Temple Mount
Jerusalem (JTA) — Three Israeli
police officials and a Muslim cler-
gyman were injured at the Tem-
ple Mount in Jerusalem when 20
members of a far-right Jewish
group tried to enter the complex
to pray.
A scuffle broke out when police
and Muslim officials responsible
for overseeing Islamic holy sites
in the Old City forcibly tried to
remove the members of the Chai
V'Kayam group.
Twelve of the demonstrators
were detained.
Israel has banned Jewish and
Christian groups from holding
prayers on the Temple Mount out
of concern that disturbances
could spark.
Suicide-Bomb
Attempt Foiled
Jerusalem (JTA) — A suicide-
bomb attempt near Netanya was
foiled by agents of Shin Bet, Is-
rael's domestic intelligence ser-
vice, Israel security forces said.
Zacharia Zakrana, from the
village of Kabatiya in the West
Bank, had planned to strap ex-
plosives to his body and blow
himself up at a hitchhiking sta-
tion at the entrance to the city.
He was arrested a day before
the planned attack.
Two other members of the Is-
lamic fundamentalist Hamas
group, also from Kabatiya, were
arrested on suspicion of having
planned the attack.
Mr. Zakrana had volunteered
to carry out the attack to prove
that he did not collaborate with
Israeli authorities, news reports
said.
