THE NAME Builders Associa-
tion of Southeastern Michigan
has been changed to the Building
Industry Association (BIA) of
Southeastern Michigan.
"A name change was needed
because our membership — both
home builders and associate
members — now engages in ac-
tivities beyond just building hous-
ing," said Janet Compo, president
of the BIA and chief executive of-
ficer of James D. Compo Inc. of
Farmington Hills.
In addition to building single-
family homes, BIA members re-
model homes, build and manage
apartments, condominiums,
shopping centers, clinics and of-
fice buildings and develop land.
Associate members are in trade
industries or professions allied
with the field such as mortgage
finance and building products
and services.
With more than 1,950 mem-
bers and associate members, the
BIA is the third-largest state or
local association in the National
Association of Home Builders.
The BIA was called the Detroit
Builders Association when it was
founded in 1928. The name was
changed to the Builders Associa-
tion of Metropolitan Detroit in
1955 and the Builders Associa-
tion of Southeastern Michigan in
1967.

THE COLLEGE of Business
Administration at the Universi-
ty of Detroit Mercy has been re-
accredited for 10 years by the
American Assembly of Collegiate
Schools of Business (AACSB).
Of the 1,200 colleges and uni-
versities in the United States of-
fering both undergraduate and
graduate business degrees, only
261 (or 25 percent) are accredit-
ed by the AACSB.
U-D Mercy is the lone private
school in Michigan with the
AACSB's accreditation, and it is
the second-oldest accredited
school in the state (the Universi-
ty of Michigan is the oldest).
