jor music competition at the
grand concert hall in nearby
Lvov. The Nazis invaded and
Tzvi and Miriam were shot; the
boys were interred in a camp.
Managing to escape, they hid in
a forest near Przemyslany for
more than a year. Two weeks be-
fore the Russian army liberated
the area, some anti-Semitic
Ukrainian nationalists found
Dulko and killed him.
After the war, Poldek changed
his name, married a Polish
woman and became the music di-
rector of the Polish Army Sym-
phony Orchestra. "Why did I
remain?" he says in the film. "It
would have been very hard for
me to leave this land where my
father lies, where my mother lies,
where my brother lies. I must lie
there together with them."
Nevertheless, more than 40
years went by and he never re-
visited his childhood home. Then
Mr. Strom showed up in his life.
"If we're going to make a film," he
told Mr. Kozlowski, "we have to
go back."
At first, says Mr. Strom, Mr.
Kozlowski didn't want to go. But
then, through a mutual friend in
Israel, Mr. Kozlowski learned
that Shimon Fein, a man with
whom he had shared those dread-
ful years in the camp and the for-
est, might still be living in Lvov.
Mr. Strom recorded their reunion
after 43 years. With Mr. Fein be-
side him for emotional support,
Mr. Kozlowski returned to Prze-
myslany.
Midway through the film, the
two old men sit in a hotel room in
Lvov, reminiscing. "Shimon,"
says Mr. Kozlowski in amaze-
ment, "we were in the worst
camp in the world, we were in a
death camp, and the forest, we
were almost dead, and we sur-

vived. The nation of Israel lives!
In the forest, in the camp, in the
ghetto."
"One must live," Mr. Fein
replies quietly.
And that is what this film is
about. "We all have our tragedies,
unfortunately," says Mr. Strom.
"But you have to overcome them.
Otherwise, you become part of
the tragedy. You have to go on."
Mr. Strom, who leads two
klezmer bands of his own, stud-
ied with Mr. Kozlowski and
learned from him "to play as
though your violin were your sid-
dur [prayer book]," but he also
learned "a stronger inner resolve.
I guess what has affected me
most is to have been with these
men who overcame great odds
but who survived just by luck and
personal strength.

Klezmer music came
"from the heart,
from the blood."

— Leopold Kozlowski

"I often ask myself, 'What is
my contribution in my short ex-
istence in this universe?' Some
people are very sad at the end of
their lives because they have con-
cerned themselves with what
they have, not with who they are.
These men are not celebrities, but
they are more powerful and to me
have much more of an effect on
the people around them than the
celebrity-types because they are
leading a real life."
Unlike a lot of Hollywood
movies, The Last Klezmer isn't
technically slick, but it's real. Go
see for yourself.
