1 4,

Near the front of the restau-
rant sat the cash register and a
counter filled with candy bars,
cigarettes, gum and cigars.
Cashier Henrietta Ruda was the
last person to see you out.
"I never had a cashier's job be-
fore I applied," she says. But she
was an attractive, friendly girl
and everybody liked her.
One of those who liked her best
was Julius Ruda. A driver for the
Checker Cab Company, he was a
regular at the Cream of Michi-
gan. He smoked Lucky Strikes,
and it wasn't long before Henri-
etta started saving two packs un-
der the counter for him.
Henrietta took Julius' check
and his money. He took her
heart.
"I fell in love with him because
he was a good man," she says.
Henrietta continued working
at the Cream of Michigan after
she married Julius. The two
lived in an apartment on Pin-
gree. But after 10 years, it was

John Vagiates loved this

it's excellent

time to move on to something
else.
She has only fond memories of
the place. "Those were the good
years," she says.
John Vagiates stayed in the
business until 1958, long after the
all the Jews were gone from 12th
Street.
By 1936, Constantine Tsan-
gados had left the partnership
with Vagiates and Zakaro, and
Eugene Weinberger had joined
up. The three stayed together un-
til 1953, when Vagiates was run-
ning the business by himself.
Then Vagiates had a stroke.
He was hospitalized at Sinai.
Vagiates' son-in-law Monte Bas-
bas says, "Jewish people came in
droves. They all had stories about
how he had helped them." With
Mr. Basbas' help, Vagiates in
1958 sold the Cream of Michigan
Cafe to Morris Cohen and his
wife, Ida, who eventually sold it
to Ralph A. Crumbie. Crumbie
renamed the place Cal's Cream
of Michigan and operated it un-
til it closed in the 1970s.
After selling the restaurant,
Vagiates moved to Massachu-
setts, where his daughter and
son-in-law cared for him until his
death in 1964. He is
buried in Evergreen
Cemetery in Detroit.
Henrietta Ruda,
now a widow, lives in
West Bloomfield.
Harry Fleisher
was one of four Pur-
ples involved in the
infamous " C olling-
wood Massacre." One
afternoon in 1931 the
gang, in an apart-
ment complex on
Collingwood Street,
gunned down three
Chicago mobsters
who had dared en-
croach on their turf.
Three of the Purple Gang went
to jail, where, no doubt, they
could have managed to get their
hands on some of that Cream of
Michigan banana cream pie. (Af-
ter all, they played cards and ate
sandwiches even as they were be-
ing transported to Marquette
State Prison).
For reasons still unknown,
Harry Fleisher escaped prosecu-
tion for the Collingwood Mas-
sacre. After disappearing for a
number of years, he was convict-
ed in 1944 of armed robbery. He
spent 20 years in prison and was
released in 1965.
Not much remains on the site
of the former Cream of Michigan.
Today it is a vacant lot filled with
sharp, dry weeds. There are old
envelopes (their addresses un-
readable), plastic and bits of
newspaper.
Sometimes, you can see a fa-
miliar Cream of Michigan sight:
the Vernor's label. But now they
are on cans, twisted and torn, and
all it takes for them to be blown
away is a strong wind. 111
