start-from-scratch attitude to
their private lives. Widowed men
and women started anew and
embarked on families.
"They were right to go on. Life
has to go on. In the DP camps,
things were busy like a beehive.
It wasn't even a year after liber-
ation, but these people had a cer-
tain spirit. That is the Jewish
spirit," Mrs. Schaver says.
To her, the camps were
Carnegie Hall. Seats in her au-
diences filled quickly. Beds and
wheelchairs were transported
from recovery units to mess halls
and stables — wherever the show
was being performed.
Mrs. Schaver recollects near-
ly 50 performances. She remem-
bers the faces of hundreds of
Jews from diverse backgrounds.
While overseas, she and her hus-
band, Monis, took into their care
an orphan boy, Isaac, whom they
later adopted as their son.
In her Southfield apartment,
Ms. Schaver, now 90, keeps the
UNRRA badge she wore on her
uniform. A drawer of her desk
contains mementos of apprecia-
tion from people who loved her
music. She has letters and an
honorary steel tool, engraved
with her name, courtesy of ORT.
Many years ago at a private
luncheon in suburban Detroit,
Mrs. Schaver re-met one of the
people she touched in the camps.
Riva Thatch had immigrated to
America in 1950. She began
