message now coming from Israel.

People my age remember when
Israel was established. People in
Israel now want to make sure
that Jewish continuity is flour-
ishing here in America. So what
you are seeing is Israelis con-
cerned about Americans."
Mrs. Hermelin can remember
as a youth helping to build a float
for Shaarey Zedek. But she, too,
said that our challenge now is to
keep the younger generations in-
terested in Israel the other 360
days a year when there isn't a
walk or a festival.
"The issue for me today is the
learning to appreciate the joys of
Israel and the partnership that
needs to continue between Israel
and the American Jewish com-
munity," said Mr. Hermelin.
"Why do we only come together
in a show of solidarity when there
is a tragedy?
"The joy is sometimes taken
for granted. But Israel should be
a day-to-day part of every Jew-
ish person's life and soul. I'm a
big believer in celebrating life. A
birthday is only a one-day holi-
day. That's wonderful, but there
are other days as well. But, you
need a day, still. You need a day
because of the kids. The kids will
remember. A day like an Israel
Fest can become an important
moment for a young person's con-
nection with Israel.
"When children walk with
their parents and grandparents
for 3 1/2 miles, and they are
among their people, something
wonderful happens, and they do
remember it all of their lives."
It's true, though, that having
an identity with Israel is some-
thing that a young Jew should
learn and have within from an
early age. That's why it is so im-
portant that we get our children
to Israel by high school. That's
why the continuity has to build
up, and that's why the "same 3
1/2 miles" that many of us have
walked year after year lead not
just around the Maple-Drake
area, but hopefully those steps
take us all the way to Israel.
During Pesach cleaning, my
family and I went through some
of those old boxes that have been
sitting in the closet unopened for
a few years. One box had a pho-
to of my wife carrying "piggy-
back" my daughter. My daughter
was 2 at the time and sleeping
with her head on my wife's shoul-
der. It was at a Walk for Israel.
That was nine years ago. That
photo is part of our family his-
tory, and it is one that my now-
11-year-old looked at and had a
laugh over.
"I remember that one," she
kidded.
Maybe not.
But maybe one day, she'll re-
member the "machers" and what
they were doing for Israel.
Maybe one day she'll even be
a "macher." But if not, she'll at
least be a walker. 0
