MSU Hillel
Makes Changes

JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER

I

n his seven years as Hillel di-
rector at Michigan State Uni-
versity, Mark Finkelstein's
responsibilities have been as
diverse as the MSU student
body.
Accessing Judaism on the In-
ternet, challenging Kwame
Toure during an on-campus ap-
pearance and providing Jewish
programming for 2,000 MSU
students were all part of his job
-- a job that will end this sum-
mer.
Dr. Finkelstein is leaving Hil-
lel to pursue work in synagogue
management or community re-
lations, but has not found an-
other job. A new director has not
been named.
Dr. Finkelstein was recently
honored by MSU President M.
Peter McPherson, the MSU
Board of Trustees, East Lansing
Mayor Robert Phipps and two
area state representatives. Stu-
dents dedicated a room at the
Hillel building in his honor.
Other changes are also being
planed for the MSU Hillel.
A committee of Hillel board
members is looking at renovat-
ing the existing two-story build-
ing or moving to another
location.
"The building needs some-
thing to make the space more us-
able," said Annette Steinborn,
president of MSU Hillel's 26-
member board. "The committee
is examining the best route to
take and right now there are
many factors to consider."
The current building, former-
ly a sorority house, is one of a
small number of college Hillels
that provide in-house living
arrangements for students.
Eliminating such housing is be-
ing looked at.
Financing for renovations or
a move is an issue. Fund-raising
efforts will not begin until the
board determines the building's
future, Ms. Steinborn said.
Since the committee is still in
its infancy, no decisions have
been made.
The board is hoping to decide ,
soon on Dr. Finkelstein's suc-
cessor. The board is working
closely with the national Hillel
office to hire a new director.
"The search process is in
progress. Whoever is hired will
be someone the board and na-
tional agrees on," Ms. Steinborn
said.
David Raphael, Hillel's assis-
tant international director for
field operations, said the organi-
zation has plans to visit East
Lansing soon.
"We're working hard with the
East Lansing community," he
said. ❑
