eely has been raped and
plans to have an abortion.
Du is a right-to-lifer and
registered nurse intent on
saving the baby.
Keely and Du, the play that
dramatizes the relationship that
develops between these women,
soon will be staged in an inde-
pendent production put together
by a high-school junior.
Jaime Newman, a 16-year-old
student at Kingswood, is using
$3,500 in savings she accumu-
lated from bat mitzvah gifts and
some acting and commercial
work to present the topical piece.
The aspiring film actress has
cast herself as Keely, who has
been kidnapped by a radical, anti-
abortion organization. The teen-
ager cast Joyce Morehouse, her
forensics coach, as Du, who is
spending months confining the
victim against her will so the
baby can be born.
The rest of the ensemble mix-
es adults and teen-agers, some
invited and others responding to
ads placed by the teen-ager.
"I'm very involved with foren-
sics, and I take months at a time
to find pieces to compete with,"
Jaime explained. "I came across
Keely and Du and fell in love with
it.
"Every year at school, they do
a student-directed play, and I got
to thinking that this would be a
wonderful vehicle for good the-
ater there. The human issues it
raises really drew me to it.
"I brought it in to people at my
school, but they chose to produce
another play. I decided to go in-
dependent, not realizing how big
a project it was going to be."
Although Jaime was able to
use Cranbrook facilities for re-
hearsals, she had to find other
space for the actual perfor-
mances. She settled on Roeper
City and Country School.
While preparing for her per-
formances, which begin at 8 p.m.
May 18-21, Jaime faced two ma-
jor problems.
It took innumerable telephone
calls before she gained the rights
to produce the drama. And, after
one director backed out because
of conflicting commitments, she
was able to turn to her father,
who had done some extracurric-
ular directing as a student at the
University of Michigan.
"Jaime is an extremely focused
person," said dad Fred Newman,
who develops high-tech software.
"She knows what she wants, and
she's on her way to a film career.
Since she's personally responsi-
ble for the finances, she can look
at this very seriously."

Jaime has been studying act-
ing at Kingswood, at Interlochen,
through Second City, with the Ac-
tors Alliance and under the di-
rection of private coaches.
Ms. Morehouse, a full-time
English teacher at Cranbrook
and director of the Cranbrook
Theatre School in the summer, is
glad to be working in the pro-
duction and feels very connected
to her young producer.
Jaime Newman
"It's kind of neat because each
of us is suited to the parts we
play," said Ms. Morehouse. "I
don't see it as any kind of hierar-
chy. When Pm in any play, I just
get lost in the production."
Jaime is hoping for a big audi-
ence. Although she hopes to
break even financially, she is not
after a profit.
"This year I haven't done a
whole lot of acting, so I created
my own opportunity," Jaime said.
"I really didn't think it would be
as time-consuming. I have a four-
hour rehearsal every other day.
In between, I have crew meet-
ings."
A graduate of Hillel Day
School, she has learned to bud-
get her time.
"My parents have always told
me to find my goal and then go
and do it because people can do
whatever they want to do," Jaime
said. "I've learned from them that
if you will it, it is no dream." D
Keely and Du will be per-
formed 8 p.m. May 18-21 at
Roeper City and Country School,
2190 N. Woodward, Bloomfield
Hills. Tickets, at $10, are avail-
able at the door.
