The two genes that she has al-
ready reported on have inter-
esting functions that shed light
on how the "death sentence" is
carried out. One of the genes, for
example, is responsible for the
production of very unique pro-
tein kinase that requires calci-
um to function and carries
specific regions that are involved
in protein-protein interactions
— the first such kinase enzyme
to be identified.
"Although," Professor Kimchi
says, "we are only beginning to
study these new genes and their
enzyme products, they may
eventually provide important
clues for understanding tumor
development. Moreover, we can
also envision ways of counter-
acting operation of these en-
zymes. This may be useful for
the prevention of cell death in
various diseases, including
Alzheimer's or Parkinson's dis-
ease — which involve the pre-
mature death of specific
varieties of brain cells — and
AIDS, in which particular T cells
die before their time."
Professor Kimchi's Chair was
established by the Helena Ru-
binstein Foundation of New
York, which presently provides
support to the Weizmann Insti-
tute via one other Professorial
Chair, a Career Development
Chair (awarded to younger aca-
demic staff members), and a
Ph. D. research fellowship. El
