"One of the things that we were looking for was a principal who could instill a greater spirit within the students as well as the staff," he said. One of the first changes will oc- cur in the curriculum where more electives are being brought in and the order of the math and science classes will be reconfigured. According to Dr. Beneson, the problem in the curriculum stemmed from a high-school pro- gram that accommodated senior year in Israel. Classes were planned to allow students to go abroad in their final year with the knowledge they should have at- tained during a four-year pro- gram in the United States. "There was frustration on the parents' part." Since the senior year in Israel program ended a few years ago, the school has sought to make ad- justments in the math and sci- ence classes. Specific changes include offering physics to the twelfth-grade students and post- poning biological science from eighth grade to the ninth grade. "The plan is to give the stu- dents who study the physical sci- ences more of a math background," said Rosalie Lake, principal of general studies at Akiva. Another plan is to give the stu- dents more electives to choose from, particularly offering ad- vanced placement history and bi- ology to students seeking college credits. "The crux of it really is trying to provide more options for stu- dents, more ways they can move through the curriculum," Ms. Lake said. Three students left the school last year, complaining, in part, that the school did not provide them with adequate preparation for college or enough options. Mr. Eisenberg expects those students to return next year. One big change will be the ad- dition of staff, Ms. Lake said, to accommodate both the increased electives as well as the separate- sex classes that will begin next school year with the ninth grade. Dr. Beneson and Mr. Eisen- berg said the increase in staff may affect tuition in the future. "It is too early to project rais- es in tuition," Mr. Eisenberg said. "It all depends on a lot of factors." ❑
