grew up in Southfield; her par-

"It helps a ton that he (Mr.
Goldstein) knows what's going
on, and they (medical personnel)
treat him a little differently. This
experience will definitely make
him a better physician in the long
run," said Ms. Goldstein.
Mr. Goldstein worked closely
with the U-M medical school
deans to devise a program to al-
low him to graduate. "I couldn't
complete the regular rotations,"
he said.
The last chapter of his book,
Hidden Lessons, gives specific
suggestions to medical students
and physicians and will be the
subject of his speech to his class-
mates in June.
Because of commencement,
any transplant for Mr. Goldstein
will happen this summer. Then
he plans to take a year off to ful-
ly recuperate and do research be-
fore beginning an orthopedic
residency in 1996.0

n the next few months, the
first of several changes at Aki-
va Hebrew Day School will oc-
cur in a small office in the
68-year-old brick building on
Southfield.
First, Rabbi Zev Shimansky
will pack up the room in which
he has operated as Akiva's head-
master for the past seven years.
He will move to Binghamton,
New York, where he will assume
the job of headmaster at Hillel
Academy, an Orthodox day school
serving kindergarteners through
eighth-graders.
Then Rabbi Karmi Gross will
unpack his boxes and prepare to
take the helm as the new prin-
cipal. But before he can get com-
fortable, more changes will occur
at the Orthodox day school.
The curriculum will be
changed, bringing the high-school
classes more in line with a college
preparatory formula. Then, sin-
gle-sex classes will begin.
And if that isn't enough, the
school has plans to relocate by
July 1996, already having sold its
current location to a developer. A
lack of space is driving out the
kindergarten and nursery-school
children who will move to a yet-
to-be-disclosed location.
School board president Dr.
David Beneson is confident that
Rabbi Gross will lead the school
