WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE

"

n the world of Jewish educa-
tion, there are generally signs
when something has worked
the way it should have.
For one, the programs draw
people from far and wide. An-
other sign is the right kind of
crowd, made up of people at
which the program was targeted.
And another is that everyone who
says she is going shows up.
All three happened Sunday at
a Jewish women's study retreat.
Sponsored by Midrasha Center
for Adult Learning, a division of
the Agency for Jewish Education,
"Exploring Kedusha: Women's
Study Retreat" drew 77 women,
with organizers turning people
away at the door.
Held on Rosh Chodesh, the
program was also sponsored
by the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan De-
troit, the Women's League for
Conservative Judaism-Michi-
gan Branch, the Woman's
Auxiliary of the United He-
brew Schools, Greater Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah, Temple
Israel and the sisterhoods of
Adat Shalom Synagogue, Con-
gregation Beth Shalom, Tem-
ple Beth El and Temple
Emanu-El.
`The success came from the ex-
perience of just being with women,
davening and learning," said Nan-
cy Kaplan, director of Midrasha
and an organizer of the event.
"That was something special."
The day began with refresh-
ments at the Jewish Communi-
ty Center in Oak Park. The
women, some from as far as
Toronto and Israel, listened to
the keynote speaker, Dr. Devora
Steinmetz, address the rationale
of mitzvah, using kashrut as a
case in point.
The participants then broke
into two study periods, featuring

six classes. Educators Fran Pearl-
man, Susann Codish, Ruth
Bergman, Aviva Silverman, Ne-
hama Glogower and Rabbi Amy
Brodsky led the sessions, all fo-
cusing on Kedoshim, the Torah
portion for the week. The day con-
cluded with dinner and a Ma'ariv
service.
For some of the women who
participated, the event was long
overdue and worth any measure
to attend.
"This is the most exciting time
to be a Jewish woman," Windsor
resident Karen Folk said. "No one
ever intellectually reached out to
women like this before. Our
mothers never would have had
this opportunity.
"I think outreach to Jewish

adults, especially to women, is
important to the community," she
said. 'The more we know, the bet-
ter off we are."
Hollie Malamud, a former Ann
Arbor resident who recently
moved to Ferndale, signed up to
further her Jewish education as
well as to network.
"I thought it was a good way to
touch base and get involved with
other women who are interested
in Jewish learning," Ms. Mala-
mud said.
