Zeffirelli
Extravaganza
A:mong the leading artists plan-
ning to make a contribution to the
Jerusalem 3000 celebration, to
be held next year, is director
Franco Zeffirell i.
The director has been con-
tracted to create a multimedia
presentation of lasers, music, the-
ater, fireworks and other special
effects in a production chronicling
the history of the city from the
days of King David to the present.
The Zeffirelli extravaganza will
premiere Aug. 5 and continue
through Aug. 22, 1996.
Also to be included in the
Jerusalem 3000 celebration is a
production by the Deutsche
Staatsoper, Berlin's opera com-
pany, of Beethoven's Fidelio, un-
der the direction of conductor
Daniel Barenboim.
Celebration organizers have
commissioned two historical
plays for the occasion. The Dissi-
dents, by Yehoshua Sobol, will de-
scribe the Jewish revolt against
the Romans. It will make its de-
but next October at the Khan
Theater in Jerusalem. Shmuel
Hasfari's David and Absaiom will
open in August.
Additionally, the division of
cultural and scientific affairs of
the foreign ministry is oversee-
ing an international project titled
"Children of the World Draw
Jerusalem," which will culminate
in a three-month exhibition.
Through Israel's mission abroad,
students aged 7-14 have been
asked to draw personal impres-
sions of Jerusalem.

Culture in Israel.
