FRANKLIN, MI 48025

A deeply felt affinity for Native
American and Southwest culture
and landscape permeates the art
and sculpture at MESA ARTS. The
artifacts represent the earth, cultur-
al brotherhood and global harmo-
ny. According to Native American
beliefs there is nobility and spirit in
the humblest being. The bear, for
example, represents stewardship
over the earth, wildness and human
respect for that wildness. In print-
ings and watercolors, man and an-
imals are brought together in studies
that are joyous, tender and bold.
Mesa Arts' Southwest art and jew-
elry, pottery, sculpture, furniture and
weavings nurture and enrich the hu-
man spirit.

Marcia Boxman, Nan Carnick
and Elaine Yaker, owners of Pierce
Street Gallery of Photography, es-
tablished Pierce Street Portraits with
the goal of bringing the beauty and
enduring quality of the black and
white photograph to children's por-
traiture.
The resulting black and white stu-
dio portraits reveal the joy, thought-
fulness, playfulness and dignity of
each child who sits before the cam-
era.

BIRMINGHAM

Xochipilli Gallery is featuring work
by Detroit sculptor Susan Aaron-
Taylor through May 15, 1995. The
artist will deliver a free public lecture
at the gallery on April 29, 2 p.m. Us-
ing modeling compound and blend-
ing materials such as gemstones,
wire and driftwood, the artist trans-
lates intuition into something tangi-
ble in this exhibit. Her latest series,
"Deities," suggests mythology re-
sembling goddesses or anthropo-
morphic creatures. Gallery hours
are 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tuesday
through Saturday.
