"We try to get grants and
make arrangements for the
dancers to audition for the best
programs. We also plan special
events."
During the past two sum-
mers, Cindy auditioned and was
accepted for training by two re-
spected companies — first the
Burklyn Theatre in Vermont
and then the Ballet Met in
Columbus, Ohio. This coming
summer, she will study with the
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.
"The program is for six weeks,
and it's very intensive," Cindy
said. "We will be dancing five
hours a day for six days out of
the week. At the end of six
weeks, we will put on a perfor-
mance."
"I like to try new things, and
ballet companies like to see that
applicants have experienced a
whole range of teaching and
teachers."
Mrs. Phillips, who also favors
dance programs because they
help develop appreciation for
classical music, has a different
slant on the summer sessions.
"My husband and I have en-
couraged Cindy to be part of the
programs because students hear
lectures on nutrition, are given
exercises to strengthen different
muscles and learn how to deal
with injuries," Mrs. Phillips said.
Cindy, whose height reaches
almost six feet when she is on
her toes, does not have to worry
about weight, but there are oth-
er physical concerns since a bout
with tendonitis of the hip be-
came her most trying experi-
ence.
Although she applied a lot of
ice and took extra time to rest so
that her hip could heal, the teen-
age artist refused to give up
much of her regular routine.
"The best part of dancing is
being with people who share the
same interests and can do what
I enjoy," said Cindy, who plans
to attend a performing arts col-
lege where she also can take an-
imation courses for a back-up
career.
"I like that we do it for our-
selves without competing with
each other."
