Voices of survivors of the Holo-
caust will be preserved through
a $30,000 gift from the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit's Max M. Fisher Commu-
nity Foundation to the
University of Michigan-Dear-
born.
The gift will be sued to support
an archive of interviews with
survivors of the Holocaust as-
sembled by UM-Dearborn histo-
ry Professor Sidney Bolkosky.
Over the last dozen years, Pro-
fessor Bolkosky has interviewed
more than 165 Holocaust sur-
vivors, gathering more than 330
hours of audio tape and more
than 80 hours of video tape.
The tapes have been used by
scholars, psychologists, histori-
ans and more than 700 under-
graduate students seeking
insight into the attempt by Nazis
to annihilate Europe's Jews be-
fore and during World War II.
Copies of the interviews have
been added to archives at the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial muse-
um, as well as other collections
around the world.
The contribution from the
Jewish Federation of Metropol-
itan Detroit's Max M. Fisher
Community Foundation will al-
low Professor Bolkosky and oth-
er scholars to gather and
transcribe more interviews, pre-
serve the archive,and distribute
transcripts and copies to schol-
ars and students around the
world.

Commemoration
Of Liberation

U.S. soldiers representing Self-
ridge Air National Guard under
the command of Brigadier Gen-
eral Allen Ness will join Shaar-
it Haplaytah and the Holocaust
Memorial Center in commemo-
rating the 15th anniversary of
the liberation of many of Ger-
many's death and concentration
camps by American armed
forces.
They will open the annual
Memorial Academy program on
April 30 bearings flags repre-
senting the American units that
liberated such camps as Dachau
and Buchenwald.Survivors of
these camps will march side by
side with the soldiers.
Dr. Steven Grant and Dr.
Joseph Berenholz, both members
of the Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter's Executive Committee, will
introduce the soldiers.Temple Is-
rael's Cantor Harold Orbach will
lead the musical selections ac-
companying the march. Colonel
Ronald W. Rubin of Selfridge Air
National Guard Base will deliv-
er remarks on the historic sig-

nificance of the 15th anniversary
of the liberation of the camps by
American forces.
A highlight of the program will
be the candlelighting ceremony
held in memory of the 6 million
Jewish martyrs who perished in
the Holocaust.
The Memorial Academy pro-
gram will be held on Sunday,
April 30, at 1 p.m. in the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community Cen-
ter.

Round Table
Receives Grant

The Greater Detroit Interfaith
Roundtable, the local chapter of
the National Conference which
promotes diverse ethnic aware-
ness in the metro Detroit com-
munity, received a grant for
$20,000 from the Community
Foundation for Southeastern
Michigan.
The purpose of the grant is to
launch a cultural awareness
training program hosted by the
Round Table in north Central
Section of Detroit, near the city's
11th Police Precinct.
The Community Foundation
for Southeastern Michigan is
built around a concept first orig-
inated 80 years ago. It is a per-
manent community endowment
built by gifts from hundreds of
community citizens and organi-
zations committed to the future
of southeastern Michigan. The
foundation is governed by a 46-
member board of civic leaders
and serves the seven counties of
Wayne, Oakland, Macomb,
Washtenaw, St. Clair, Monroe
and Livingston.
Since its founding in 1984, it
has provided grants totaling
more than $27-million for pro-
jects in the fields of education,
art and culture, health, civic de-
velopment and human services.

Stepping Stones
Cycle Ends

Stepping Stones to a Jewish Me,
a community program for inter-
faith families, will hold its clos-
ing session on Sunday, May 7,
1:30 p.m. at Temple Israel. Sev-
en families have completed the
two-year cycle of the program
and will receive special recogni-
tion.
The families will participate
in an Israel celebration with
Maccabiah games and receive
certificates of completion of their
participation in th Stepping
Stones program, which is a re-
cipient of the Max M. Fisher
Community Foundation.
