JEWISH AGENCY
POLITICAL ACTION
COMMITTEE
Agency Political Action Commit-
tee, embarked on an orchestrat-
ed effort to increase awareness
and recruit members.
The PAC's advisory board is
made up of activists from both
parties and includes S. Evan
Weiner, Robert Naftaly, Nathan
Upfal, Andrea Fischer and
Robert Orley.
"Often, it's not sexy enough,"
said Mr. Weiner, referring to po-
litical action on a state level. "Peo-
ple go to Washington to meet
with lawmakers all the time.
Lansing has been ignored. That's
where we can have the greatest
impact."
JAPAC works on behalf of the
entire Jewish community, fund-
raising for legislators who sup-
port the programs of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit and its member agencies. It
supports incumbents and candi-
dates seeking statewide offices.
"Two of the areas JAPAC is
trying to make an impact on are
mental health and social ser-
vices," said Dennis Muchmore,
the lobbyist for the Detroit Jew-
ish community.
"Its (JAPAC) creation has
raised awareness among policy
makers and new candidates run-
ning for office."
Each JAPAC member con-
Weiner said. "Our goal for this
year is to raise $20,000 and work
our way up to $50,000."
Past yearly contributions have
ranged between $6,000 and
$8,000.
For information on JAPAC,

Ave., Detroit, MI 48209. ❑

When the Ann Arbor Democ-

lost to Bob Carr in a close De-

Senate, and the politician made
a career change.
Today, she is in publishing.

Ms. Pollack's publication will
cover politics, business and travel
topics, as well as personality pro-
