DP - Some. I have met with
some of their leaders. We have sat
together on panels, on interfaith
discussion groups.
BD - Do you believe the Mus-
lims would have faced great dan-
ger had this turned out to be a
Middle Eastern terrorist attack?
DP - Yes. On the very day of
the bombing, there were bomb
threats against the mosques.
They definitely had something to
worry about. Had it turned out
like that, they would have been
in a very uncomfortable position.
BD - How would you have felt
had it turned out to be a Middle
Eastern terrorist attack?
DP - It doesn't matter to me
which crazy group did this. I
couldn't care if it was the Arabs
or a militia. Some militias are
anti-Semitic.
BD - How do you deal with
them?
DP - If they don't bother us -
we don't bother them. Until now,
we just saw them as people who
like to play soldiers in the woods.
But that's about to change.
BD - How?
DP - I think the government
is going to crack down on militia
groups. Many of them have ultra
right-wing ideology and are anti-
Semitic.
BD - Has the Oklahoma City
Jewish community faced any anti-
Semitic attacks in the past?
DP - In 1989, the two syna-
gogues were covered with
swastikas and anti-Jewish graf-
fiti. Six young men (ages 17-26)
were caught. They were all pun-
ished. They went to jail. They
were fined. Their names appeared
in newspapers. Their families
were embarrassed and had to pay
about $15,000 each in legal costs.
That brought (anti- Semitic at-
tacks) to an end.
BD - Were they members of
a militia or any right-wing group?
DP - No. They were just kids
who got drunk and thought it was
funny. This is not an anti-Semit-
ic area of the country. Foreigners
aren't popular here, but not Jews
per se.
BD - Can you tell us a little
about the Jewish community in
Oklahoma City?
DP - Our synagogue was
founded in 1903. Jews have been
here from the beginning. They
came here in 1889, when Okla-
homa was open for white, and also
black, settlement. The Jews came
on the Oklahoma Run. Many
Jewish peddlers came here and
married Indian women. There are
some towns here named after
Jewish Squawmen (white men
who many Indian women). Spiro,
for example.
BD - Why did you come here?
DP - I was an Air Force Chap-
lin stationed here during the Viet-
nam War. I was one of 22 people
up for the job (of Temple Israel's
spiritual leader). I was very hap-
