py to get it. People here take
care of one another. You have to
remember, the people who did
this (bomb the federal building)
are not from Oklahoma City.
They bombed the (federal build-
ing) because they thought that
the FBI unit that raided (the
Branch Davidian compound in
Waco, Texas, on April 19, 1993)
had an office there. It was a re-
taliation against the govern-
ment.
BD — Will Oklahoma City
ever be the same after this
bombing?
DP — No. No. It will never be
the same. The sense of innocent
immunity is lost.
BD — How can we help Ok-
lahoma City?
DP — Make little thank-you
cards and send them to the Na-
tional Guard, the police and fire-
men. Even send cards to the
search dogs.
BD — What about the chil-
dren in Oklahoma City? How
are they coping with this
tragedy?
DP — Almost every child at
the temple has a friend with a
dead or missing relative. Today
at Sunday school we canceled all
the classes and had mental-
health professionals talk with
the children. We tried to help
them with their anxieties.
BD — What did you tell your
congregation members on Fri-
day night?
DP — I talked about the
whole question of the Arab com-
munity. I said, if it was attacked,
we would have had the respon-
sibility of speaking out on its be-
half and protecting it. We would
offer the Arab community our
sanctuary.
BD — Even if it turned out
that Arab terrorists were re-
sponsible?
DP — Yes. The local Muslims
are not involved in that kind of
thing. They are very much a
part of the fabric of life here.
BD — How has the Jewish
community reacted to the bomb-
ing?
DP — We have created the
Explosion Relief Fund. And
many Jews are serving as vol-
unteers.
BD — How did you feel sit-
ting at the prayer session next
to Janet Reno?
DP — We schmoozed. We
talked about the California guy,
who might be the No. 2 suspect.
She said it was unlikely that he
was, though. He's a bad guy, but
not the right one. She was very
pleasant and conversational.
BD — This week, you are go-
ing to hold another memorial
service - - for the 6 million Jew-
ish victims of the Holocaust. Is
it going to be an especially eerie
event this year?
DP — It's going to be strange.
It's going to be easier for us to
imagine terror. 0
