To Be Honored

aseball Hall of Fame mem-
ber and Detroit Tigers
broadcaster George Kell
will be honored for his de-
votion to baseball and mankind
at a dinner which will conclude
the fifth annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf & Tennis Invita-
tional.
Kell will receive the
Hank Greenberg Memorial
Achievement Award at the Mon-
day, June 12, invitational at Tarn
O'Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield.
Stephen Greenberg, Hank's
son, is scheduled to present the
award to Kell. Funds raised by the
invitational, which is sponsored
by the Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame, benefit the Hank
Greenberg Memorial Cancer
Fund at Sinai Hospital in Detroit.
A third baseman during his
playing days, Kell had a lifetime
batting average of .306. He saw
action in seven All-Star games
and he was voted the best third
baseman in Tigers' history. Kell
was elected to the Baseball Hall
of Fame in 1983. He's also a
member of the Michigan Sports
Hall of Fame.
Kell has been a Tigers broad-
caster since 1959, appearing on
both radio and television. He cur-
rently teams with Al Kaline, an-
other member of the Baseball
Hall of Fame, on Tigers telecasts
on Channel 50.

Dick Schapp will be the master
of ceremonies at the invitational
dinner. In addition, Schapp will
host a local version of ESPN's
"Sports Reporters" show featur-
ing Mitch Albom of the Detroit
Free Press and Joe Falls and Jer-
ry Green of the Detroit News.
Comerica Securities once
again is the invitational's major
sponsor and Broder Brothers is
sponsoring a $1,000,000 hole-in-
one shootout.
Steve Simons is the event
chairman. Stephen Greenberg
and Schapp are the honorary co-
chairmen. ❑

Hoopsville Offers Summer Camps

Three sports camps — two bas-
ketball and one floor hockey —
will be held this summer at
Hoopsville of Farmington Hills.
John Long basketball camps
are scheduled for July 17-21 and
Aug. 7-11. Long is an ex-Detroit
Pistons and University of Detroit
standout who currently is on tour

with Magic Johnson's All-Stars.
The Steve Strunk Roller Hock-
ey Camp will be held June 19-23
at Hoopsville. Strunk plays for
the Detroit Vipers in the Inter-
national Hockey League.

U-M Coach Talks At Groves

University of Michigan football
coach Gary Moeller will be the
guest speaker at the annual
"Meet the Coaches" night for the
football program at Birmingham
Groves High School.
The program is scheduled for
8 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the
large auditorium at the school,
which is located at 13 Mile and
Evergreen. The public is invit-
ed.
Moeller will discuss the im-

portance of athletics — especial-
ly football — to a community.
Last year, former Eastern Michi-
gan University football coach Ron
Cooper spoke at the program
about personal goals.
This fall will Mark Moeller's
sixth season as the head coach at
U-M. His teams have won three
Big Ten championships and
three bowl games and set a Big.
Ten record with 22 consecutive
league victories.
