In My New Location!

Jenny, Chaya and Avichai Mitchell use a library computer.

Douglas Zyskowski said.
The recreation center at the
Civic Center houses a hockey
rink and an outdoor pool. There
are no rooms for other activities.
A new facility would be con-
structed around the hockey rink
building. It would increase the
size from 105,000 square feet to
185,000 square feet. Amenities
would include recreation rooms
for senior citizens and teenagers,
exercise equipment, a walking
track, three basketball courts, an
additional ice rink and a smaller
slab of ice for figure skating.
The outdoor pool would also
undergo a make over. Domed in
the winter for year-round use, the
pool would be accessible to the
handicapped with a zero depth,
shore-like design.
If the proposals and millage in-
crease pass, the older buildings
would be used as city offices and
a support center for the Pavilion,
the small exhibition center inside
the Civic Center.
Resident James Moloney feels
such a change is necessary. As
president of the Friends for the
Promotion of the Southfield Fam-
ily Recreation Center, he knows
of waiting times for the use of the
ice rink, a growing demand for
figure skating lessons and limit-
ed city youth hockey programs
that turn away 200 children be-
cause there is no room for them.
"For what you would pay for
these services privately, this is a
bargain, believe me," he said.

But not everyone wants such
a change. John Bray, general
manager of CMI Health and Ten-
nis Club in Southfield, said his
membership numbers may drop.
"This will definitely affect us,"
he said. "How much we don't
know."
Health clubs, like other busi-
nesses in the area, will bear the
responsibility of paying taxes for
the rec center. But unlike other
businesses, the clubs will com-
pete with the facility.
"It might force some of the
health clubs to close," Mr. Bray
said.
And the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park may also be
affected. Drawing primarily from
residents of Southfield, Oak Park
and Huntington Woods, the Cen-
ter is located about three miles
from the Southfield recreation fa-
cility.
Leah Ann Kleinfeldt, associate
executive director of the Jewish
Community Center of Metropol-
itan Detroit, said she hoped that
those who belong to the Oak Park
JCC would keep their member-
ships and continue to support
their Center. She said quality
Jewish programming and a sense
of ownership generally bind peo-
ple to the facility.
"We should always be con-
cerned with our competition," she
said. "I hope the community un-
derstands the importance of it
and stands behind it." fl
