or a moving ceremony commemorating
through outreach and involve-
ment is to let people know that
Federation is for everybody."
Under the leadership of Rabbi
Plaut, the department began a
number of leadership and edu-
cational programs, as well as a
task force aimed at increasing
communication between temples,
synagogues and Federation.
Ms. Appelman is charged with
evaluating those initiatives, ex-
panding them and creating new
programs for individuals already
familiar with Federation, as well
as those people who have never
attended a Federation event.
"We wanted someone who
could attract not only people who
come to our door, but also the
thousands of people we must go
out and motivate," Mr. Aronson
says.
Ms. Appelman will oversee all
personnel in Federation depart-
ments that use volunteer re-
sources and sponsor programs for
the community-wide Jewish pop-
ulation. She will report directly
to Mr. Aronson.
In addition to her current work
at the AJE, Ms. Appelman directs
field services for the Whizin In-
stitute for Jewish Family Life at
the University of Judaism in Los
Angeles, Calif.
In 1994, Ms. Appelman re-
ceived the Jewish Federation's
Berman Award, given to a com-
munal professional demonstrat-
ing commitment to the needs of
metro Detroit's Jewish commu-
nity.
She also is a 1991 recipient of
the national Covenant Award,
from the Covenant Foundation,
which recognizes outstanding
contributions in the field of Jew-
ish education.
For more than 15 years, Ms.
Appelman has taught, directed
and created family education pro-
grams for agencies and schools.
She created and served as direc-
tor of Jewish Experiences For
Families (JEFF), which has been
used as a model for Jewish fam-
ily programming throughout the
United States.
Ms. Appelman says she has, as
yet, no hard and fast plans for
Federation outreach and in-
volvement programs. Her method
of leadership, she says, is to plan
events according to demand.
In her role as director of out-
reach and involvement, Ms. Ap-
pelman will survey community
members to better understand
what they want out of Federa-
tion. She will design educational
programs, leadership training
and volunteer opportunities
around existing needs and inter-
ests.
"My hope is to make people re-
alize that Federation is user-
friendly," she says.
Ms. Appelman expects to give
special attention to adults with
children in their teens and early
20s. El
