the Holocaust Memorial Center
(HMC).
Following the ceremonies,
Holocaust survivors will walk to
the adjacent HMC to place
yahrzeit candles next to the mu-
seum's eternal flame.
For Harry Praw and other sur-
vivors, the ceremonies can never
replace what was taken away.
Mr. Praw was forced from Lodz,
Poland, by the Nazis in December
1939 and moved from ghetto to
ghetto until 1942. He ultimately
survived six concentration camps
and was liberated from Bergen-
Belsen in 1945. He was 23 years
old.
"No one can visualize what
went on in the camps unless he
was there," he said. "If a German
didn't like your looks, he took out
his gun and shot you. Every
morning, bodies were lying all
around like garbage."
Several years ago, Mr. Praw
found evidence of what happened
to his family. A Florida Jewish
newspaper published a photo-
graph of the Bobwa, Poland,
cemetery. Jews in that area were
taken there by the Nazis and
shot. "That was where my fami-
ly was taken," he said.
Mr. Praw believes that "it is an
unfortunate thing that we still
have today people who preach it
never happened. When you hear
that, your blood starts to boil."
Many synagogues and temples
will have commemorations this
week, with Yom HaShoah be-
ginning Wednesday night, April
26. At noon April 26, Gov. John
Engler and the Michigan Jewish
Conference will sponsor an offi-
cial State of Michigan Holocaust
Commemoration in the Rotunda
of the State Capitol Building in
Lansing.
At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April
27, Temples Emanu-El and Beth
El will spdnsor a program at Beth
El featuring the play Remnants
and the piano composition
"Michael" performed by its com-
poser, Gabriel Bolkosky.
On Wednesday, May 3, the
HMC, Jewish Community
Council and Interfaith Round
Table will sponsor an interfaith
youth symposium on the
Holocaust at the HMC and
Jewish Community Center. ❑
