'The whole time, they never left the children. She didn't ask about money. Her questions were about the activities we did with the children." Now, the two women are close friends and partners in a licensed developmental day care. Their partnership quickly de- veloped into a friendship, Mrs. O'Neill began to learn about the plight of Soviet Jews. The more she learned and the more she saw people try to take advantage of the emigres, the more she wanted to help not only Ms. Khaykina but other New Americans as well. "If I went to Russia and walked into a world where I didn't know what to do, I would want someone to help me," Mrs. O'Neill said. "It's as simple as that. They are very courageous for coming over. I won- der if I'd be able to do what they've done." Mrs. O'Neill's acts of kindness are countless. The Goldshteyn family (see related story), relatives of Ms. Khaykina, are her newest friends. She bought the children clothing for Passover and shares in celebrating holidays. In the past, Mrs. O'Neill has made three small loans to Russian immi- grants. She talked to other day- care providers about hiring Rus- sians and many are now success- fully employed. Her phone is constantly ringing as New Americans call with ques- tions and concerns. If she doesn't have an answer, she calls the com- mittee of professional volunteers she assembled. Doctors, lawyers, a social worker, a teacher, drivers and an auto mechanic are all part of the committee. Mrs. O'Neill does not see her actions as valiant. She said they are a result of the values instilled by her parents. Growing up, Mrs. O'Neill was confused by her background. As an adopted child, she was grate- ful to her parents for passing on their heritage but, at the same time, she wondered about her an- cestry. This curiosity, which still remains, led her to learn about dif- ferent people and contributed to her aspiration to share with Russ- ian Jews. "My husband and I want to stop prejudice whenever possible and let people know there are those who will help with com- pensation," Mrs. O'Neill said. One of the greatest things is I've learned a lot about Jewish people and Jewish holidays. Ms. Khaykina, the Goldshteyns and other New Americans ap- preciate Mrs. O'Neill's friendship and acts of kindness. "I think of Elizabeth like a sis- ter," Ms. Khaykina said. "She has helped me with everything. She has been a great friend and we have a lot in common. Both of us like ballet, classical music, art and books. We're fortunate to have found each other." ❑ Arthur Gluzman Quality you can build on, a name you can trust. 1-800-ARTY-G-DJ (1-800-278-9435) DOCTOR DISCO "the specialist in party directing" CALL: JEFF 855-5571 BOOKS Bought and Sold LIBRARY BOOKSTORE 545-4300 Open 7 Days Books Bought In Your Horn,.
