Each season, Berkley High
School bestows Bear of the Year
honors on the junior or senior on
every varsity team who boasts
the highest grade-point average.
Of the six Bear of the Year
awards given out for the winter
season, five went to Jewish ath-
letes.
They were ELANA KAUF-
MAN in gymnastics (3.833 GPA),
AARON KOBERNICK in
NIKI
wrestling (3.833),
BERLIN in volleyball (3.759),
MELISSA LOEB in cheerlead-
ing (3.725) and ERIC KACZAN-
DER in boys basketball (3.122).
Kaufman, Kobernick, Berlin
and Loeb also made the Oakland
Activities Association (OAA) All-
Academic Team for the winter
season. Varsity letter-winners
who had a minimum 3.5 GPA
were eligible for the OAA honor.
Here are other Berkley winter
sports award-winners:
Boys basketball: Kaczander
also was selected the team's most
improved player.
Boys swimming: SIMON
GALED was named the team's
MVP, and he was a member of
Berkley's 200 medley relay squad
which is up for All-American con-
sideration.
Cheerleading: Loeb was se-
lected the team's MVP and she
was named All-OAA.
Gymnastics: EMILY SILLS
was named the team's MVP and
AMY KOHN (4.0) and DIANA
KOZLOFF (4.0) made the OAA
All-Academic Team.
Volleyball: MEAGAN PITT
(3.9) made the OAA All-Acade-
mic Team.
Wrestling: BEN MILER was
selected the team MVP and he
won the 3-D

ication, deter-
mination and
