Literary Events

Borders Book Shop, Southfield
Rd. at 13 Mile, will host Third
Thursday Poetry Night every
month. Readings begin at 7 p.m.
with a featured poet followed at
7:45 by 10-minute open mike
performances running until 8:30
p.m.
On April 20, the featured poet
will be Thomas Lynch, Mr.
Lynch's poetry offers a wry ex-
amination of some of life's eter-
nal verities: love, family, death,
and annoying pets.
Borders will celebrate The
Bard's 431 Birthday with music,
actors, and party favors on Sun-
day, April 23, from 4-6 p.m.
Featured performers include
Owain Phyfe (Berkley resident
and vocalist of the New World
Renaissance Band) and Seamus
Perkins (a.k.a. Jim Perkins of
Farmington Hills and local Irish
folk musician). Both musicians
are popular performers at the
Michigan Renaissance Festival.
Also, two actors from the
Hilberry Repertory Company
will enact scenes from Shake-
speare's most famous plays. Free.
No advance registration neces-
sary.
On Tuesday, April 25, at 7:30
p.m. Borders will welcome Gre-
gory Howard Williams, author
of Life On The Color Line: The

True Story of a White Boy Who
Discovered He Was Black, for

reading and discussion.
An entertaining evening of hu-
morous stories will begin at 6
p.m. on Saturday, April 29. Jer-
ry Harju, author ofNorthern Re-
flections a collection of stories
about growing up in the Upper
Peninsula during the 1940s, will
read from his latest book: North-

ern D'Lights.

Library Hosts
Music Event

The Janet Tenaj and Sven An-
derson Ensemble will perform
Sunday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in
the Oak Park Arts and Cultural
Commission continuing series of
musical performances at the Oak
Park Library.
Ms. Tenaj, jazz vocalist and
arranger, is an Oak Park resi-
dent who is making an encore
visit to the library. With Mr. An-
derson, she has traveled
throughout the United States
and Canada performing at the
Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival,
the Ottawa International Jazz
Festival and at numerous oth-
er outdoor and indoor concerts.
Mr. Anderson is an accom-
plished pianist who teaches mu-
sic at Osborn High School in
Detroit.
The conert is free of charge and
is open to the public.
