"One time we were walking
down the street, and someone in
a car yelled out something
derogatory toward us, to the ef-
fect of `Go home, nigger!' "
That pejorative shook Mr.
Marder. "I experienced very lit-
tle anti-Semitism growing up.
But seeing my colleagues and
friends insulted in this way I was
insulted."
And awakened. "Working with
the group has helped me become
colorblind," he says.
"Before, I was not as colorblind
as I could be."
He is not ignorant of the dif-
ferences between peoples. But,
Mr. Marder says, music can serve
as a bridge for people of different
cultures to cross to get to know
each other.
"Without a doubt, blacks and
Jews can get together" with the
aid of music, he says.
Mr. Marder's musical taste has
become more diverse over the
past years. One has only to look
at his record shelves to under-
stand the notable changes that
have taken place in his musical
life. Sitting alongside the albums
of the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary Choir are those indicative
ofJeffMarder's new line of work.
"I have more Mahalia Jackson
in my collection," says Mr.
Marder of the late gospel singer.
