Seder-To-Go From
Chabad House

JILL DAVIDSON SKLAR STAFF WRITER

First Chinese restaurant owners
and pizza joints popularized take-
out. Then there were drive-
through windows at fast-food
restaurant establishments.
But the latest group of people
to join the ranks of those provid-
ing meals to go is the Lubavitch
movement.
Advertising in college news-
papers across the country, the
Chabad houses run by the Or-
thodox Jewish sect are preparing
to give away the first-ever Seder-
To-Go packages.
"Around Passover time, we
have always had requests for help
with seders," said Moshe Shem-
tov, a spokesman for the Brook-
lyn-based Shluchim Office of the
campus Chabad houses. "This
year, the emissaries on campus-
es decided to go way out and put
together a national campaign to
target this need."
The packages, made of card-
board, will contain the elements
of a Passover seder, including a
box of matzahs, a bottle of kosher-
for-Passover Kedem grape juice,
a hand-made Shmurah matzah
and a guide to creating a seder.
The package can service three to
four students.

A 1 -800 telephone
number is fielding

requests for
packages.

Nationally, the group plans to
distribute 13,000 to 18,000 such
packages at no cost to students
who can't make Chabad houses'
seders or want to use it with their
families.
"We have already had 1,500 re-
quests for the packages and we
haven't run an ad yet," Mr. Shem-
tov said last week.
Some 90 Chabad houses lo-
cated on or near college campus-
es across the United states plan
to hold massive seders for stu-
dents who can not be with their
families. The event is an annual
tradition that attracts 120 people
for two nights, said Rabbi Aharon
Goldstein of the Ann Arbor
Chabad House on the Universi-
ty of Michigan campus.
"Every year we seem to have
more at our table," he said.
Rabbi Goldstein said an ad-
vertisement featuring a 1-800
telephone number ran last Fri-
day in the Michigan Daily, U-M's
campus newspaper. The nation-
al number is fielding requests for
the packages which will then be
directed back to the campus hous-
es.
