Matt Marko, vice president-in-
ternational sales at Core Indus-
tries in Bloomfield Hills, said it's
advantageous for Michigan busi-
nesses that there is a local cham-
ber which focuses on Israel.
"If a Michigan company wants
to get into international sales, Is-
rael is a good place to go not only
because of its businesses, but be-
cause it is a gateway to other
countries in the region and to Eu-
rope," Mr. Marko said.
Core Industries does business
with more than 70 countries in-
cluding Israel. Mr. Marko says
he anticipates his company will
be doing more with Israeli high-
tech firms in the future.
The chamber, which is affili-
ated with the Association of
North American-Israel Cham-
bers of Commerce, has an office
in the Maple-Drake branch of the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield, but it has gone
without an executive director for
two years.
Mr. Traison would like to see
funding from the Jewish Feder-
ation and/or local businesses help
the chamber hire an executive di-
rector.
"Even though we've done quite
well without one, getting an ex-
ecutive director is crucial to the
future success of our organiza-
tion," Mr. Traison said.
"I don't think we could offer a
salary of less than $60,000, but
we probably wouldn't need this
artificial funding for long. My goal
is to have an executive director
on board within a year."
The chamber sponsors sever-
al events annually, including four
breakfast meetings, four net-
working receptions and the an-
nual honors dinner.
The guest speaker at the 1995
dinner, held last month at the
Somerset Collection in Troy, was
Gad Yaacobi, Israel's ambassador
to the United Nations.
The next breakfast meeting —
Tuesday, April 25, at the Skyline
Club in Southfield — will feature
Nabiel Fareed, the president of the
new Palestinian-American Cham-
ber of Commerce, and Joseph
Merante, senior vice president of
ZIM American Israel Shipping Co.
A February breakfast meeting
featured Martine Gilbert, the di-
rector of trade and investment for
BIRD (the Bi-National Industri-
al Research and Development
Foundation), which provides
funds for American and Israeli
high-tech firms who wish to work
together on joint projects.
On May 4, the chamber will
host an Israeli wine-and-cheese
tasting seminar in Bloomfield
Hills which will include a talk by
Marianne Gingrich, wife of House
of Representatives Speaker Newt
Gingrich.
Mrs. Gingrich is vice president
for business development at the
Israel Export Development Co.
in Atlanta.
The chamber also is a co-spon-
