Pesach Services
Offer Signing

As part of Congregation Beth
Shalom's ongoing effort to
make its facilities and ser-
vices accessible to the physi-
cally challenged, a sign lan-
guage interpreter will be pre-
sent at three different
Passover activities.
On Shabbat morning, April
15, the first day of Pesach,
the interpreter, Carmen
Johnson, will sign the Torah
service, Rabbi David Nelson's
sermon, and parts of the
Musaf service. That evening,
Beth Shalom will hold its
annual congregational seder;
and for the first time an
interpreter for the hearing
impaired will sign during the
reading of the Haggadah.
The following Shabbat, April
22, Carmen Johnson will
translate the Yizkor service
into American Sign
Language.
The Passover interpreter is
sponsored by Congregation
Beth Shalom's Task Force on
Accessibility and the George
Tarnoff Special Needs Fund
for the Physically
Challenged. In addition to
signing services, the Task
Force has been working to
identify the initiatives the
congregation and the commu-
nity can undertake to make
Jewish observance for the
physically challenged less
challenging.
