and

ents are not comfortable an-
swering? Some parents feel that
certain topics are off-limits. Your
response may depend on your
child's age. With the younger
child, find out what she's really
asking. A children's book, or even
a picture, can help both parents
and child talk about challenging
subjects such as sexuality, di-
vorce, God or death. With an old-
er child, you might say, "I'm not
really comfortable talking about
this, but let's try to find someone
who is."
What the seder teaches us is
that growth and learning come
about when we pose questions.
The process is more important
than the result. The Rabbinical
Assembly Haggadah stresses the
message that "the simplest ques-
tion can have many answers ...
as life itself is fraught with com-
plexity and contradictions.... To
accept the fact that not every
problem can be neatly resolved is
another stage of liberation ... Ac-
knowledging that some things
are beyond our understanding is
a sign of faith."
This year, try using the seder
as a workshop to open the doors
to communication. Invite every-
one present to ask questions and
suggest answers. Experience the
excitement of one question lead-
ing to another. Turn to the
youngest child and say, "Look
what you started by asking four
little questions!" Hearing their
parents ask questions conveys a
beautiful lesson to children: that
inquiry and learning are parts of
a lifelong process, one that fam-
ilies can enjoy together. ❑

Black Tie

Israel Embassy
For Vietnam

Jerusalem (JTA) — Vietnam is
considering establishing an em-
bassy in Israel as a result of the
expansion of economic ties and
development of bilateral relations
between the two countries.
Vietnam is represented in Is-
rael through its embassy in Cairo.
Tran Quang Co, Vietnam's
deputy foreign minister, told Uri
Savir, Israel's Foreign Ministry
director-general of his country's
intention when the two met re-
cently.
Mr. Co was in Israel for an in-
ternational conference of Foreign
Ministry officials.
The two men also agreed that
economic ties should be intensi-
fied through an exchange of del-
egations of industrialists.
Mr. Co was the most senior
Vietnamese official to visit Israel
since relations were established
between the two countries.
Since early 1992, the two coun-
tries have exchanged trade dele-
gations.
