Wishing you a
happy and
healthy passover

Obviously, Mr. Fein isn't in-
cluding here all people who think
thoughts, but only people who
think pretty much the same
thoughts about Israel and the
world that he does. Such folks in-
clude the New York Times' An-
thony Lewis and Thomas L.
Friedman — who just wrote a
mirror image of Mr. Fein's piece,
carried in the April 6th Free Press
— and a great many leaders of
the American Jewish establish-
ment, as well as much of the po-
litical elite in Israel. In fact, their
thinking doesn't rest upon the
bedrock of some inarguable prin-
ciple. Rather, their shared
thoughts are premised upon
shared values — the same anti-
religious core values Pat Robert-
son detests.
What a nuisance those values
have been to the world. Contrary
to Robertson, Jewry has gener-
ally outgrown its love affair with
collectivism, but Fein's "thought-
ful people" still feel that all re-
vealed religion is mostly
superstitious nonsense; that wars
are fought only because people
won't learn to forget and forgive;
that human society should be
largely undifferentiated by cul-
ture, class, or even gender; and
that the Jews must reject "for-
mulaic orthodoxy" — not to men-
tion history's teachings — to
invent wholly man-made laws
and solutions for ourselves, for
the Arabs and for the poor, long-
suffering Jerusalem.
Just as the world finally sees
fit to honor Jewish Jerusalem,
these "thoughtful" Jews say "not
now." First, they want to comfort
our sworn enemies — who are
tantalized by Israel's every com-
promise, who abhor us partly be-
cause Jews communicate values
like Mr. Fein's. But Mr. Fein and
his friends are true believers.
They deny the values of their fa-
thers' fathers as "formulaic" and
unrealistic and Jerusalem's past
as irrelevant. Complacently, they
reject history's two clearest
lessons: that Anti-Semitism isn't
just a passing fad, but one of the
greatest abiding motivating
forces in human experience; and
that the Jewish people will nev-
er permanently abandon Judea
nor its Jerusalem, even though
our reality-denying, history-re-
jecting leadership has resolved
to erect new ghetto walls, to ren-
der most of it Judenfrei.
