Glenn Bednarsh of Antwerp Jewelers.

there be any more pressure than
that'?"
Tapper's co-owner Howard
Tapper says he doesn't know Mr.
Bednarsh, but he's confident both
stores will do well.
Mr. Bednarsh does an equal
amount of retail and wholesale
business at his store, mostly in
diamonds. Antwerp Jewelers was
exclusively wholesale until recent
years.
Before moving to Sugar Tree 2
1/2 years ago, Antwerp Jewelers
was in the Prudential Town Cen-
ter and Advance Building in
Southfield, and originally in the
Metropolitan Building on John R
in downtown Detroit.
Even though Mr. Bednarsh
has been working full time at
Antwerp Jewelers since he grad-
uated from Eastern Michigan at
age 21, his involvement and in-
terest dates back many years.
When he was young, Mr. Bed-
narsh would go on weekend buy-
ing trips to New York with Max,
his father.
Max Bednarsh, who began
Antwerp Jewelers in 1949, and
his son worked together until
Max died three years ago.
Mr. Bednarsh's great-grand-
father, Morris, and his grandfa-
ther, Joseph, were both
watchmakers. Max Bednarsh
shifted gears in the family busi-
ness, getting into diamond sales.
"I love what I'm doing because
people see you on happy occa-
sions, and they want to put their
trust in you because they're in-
vesting a lot of money," Mr. Bed-
narsh said. "I don't think
customers care about how old you
are, just about the quality of the
merchandise being offered and
the service they are getting.
"I don't deal in tchatchkes , so I
make it a point to educate my
customers with the facts they
should know, not what somebody
wants them to know. I like hav-
ing a business this size because I
take care of everything. My cus-
tomers know whom they are
dealing with."
Mr. Bednarsh's older brother
and sister did not decide to go into
the diamond business. Jeff, 41, is
a writer, and Laura, 38, is a
homemaker. Li
