A small sign along 12 Mile an- nounces Tapper's Southfield lo- cation. At the new store, a large Tapper's sign hangs on the out- side of the mall and another in the mall sign along Orchard Lake Road. "When people have wanted to find us (in Southfield), we've had to use other reference points like Franklin Bank and the Total gas station," said Howard Tapper, 46. "We're moving not only because we needed to expand, but our new store is more efficient for business and it provides better working conditions for our 60 em- ployees. It won't be as crowded. "Orchard Mall is a family place with many interesting indepen- dent stores," added Steven. "We're excited about our new lo- cation. We know it will be better for our customers and they must feel so, too, because we've had an unbelievable outpouring of good wishes from them. Much more than we expected." Steven's areas of responsibili- ty with Tapper's include mer- chandising, devising advertising campaigns and originating cus- tom-jewelry designs. Howard also works on merchandising and handles administrative matters. Both brothers spend much time with customers, selling and kib- itzing. The new store, formerly a Coats Unlimited outlet, has three islands in the middle and mer- chandise displays along the walls. In the back is a large customer- service desk and a children's area, where a television, VCR and movies for youngsters will be available so the little ones will have something to do while mom and dad shop. Because the new store is so much larger, Tapper's will be able to do more designing and man- ufacturing of merchandise. The showroom will house double the inventory, and services like re- pairs, engraving and appraisals will continue to be. offered. 'We'll be bigger physically, but we haven't changed our philoso- phy about service. I want to em- phasize that," Howard Tapper said. "Our customers have always gotten the same service whether they came in to ask a question, purchase a battery for their watch or buy merchandise worth $25 or $25,000. "We'll never outgrow that ser- vice philosophy because continu- ity is very important to us. We want our customers to see us on a consistent basis. Steven Tapper echoed his brother's thoughts. "One of the reasons we love our business is because we've helped so many longtime customers cel- ebrate their bar or bat mitzvah, then their wedding and anniver- saries," he said. "It's wonderful to be involved in so many simchas." In addition to the Tapper brothers, Neale Stone and James Pierowich are key members of the Tapper's team. Mr. Stone has been store manager for 17 years and Mr. Pierowich, an on-site master jeweler and designer, has been with Tapper s since 1986. ❑ ' LEADING ISRAELI STOCKS TRADED ON U.S. EXCHANGES Symbol Name Exchange Mar. 24 Mar. 31 Change SCIXF Scitex NASDAQ '17.50 `18,13 `0.63 ECILF ECI Telecom NASDAQ '14.63 '14.88 '0.25 TEVIY Teva Pharm NASDAQ '30.00 '30.13 `0.13 IEC PEC Israel NYSE '24.38 '26.25 '1.88 ELBTF EINt Computers NASDAQ '18.00 `19.00 '1.00 ELT Elscint LTD NYSE '2.00 '1.88 ELRNF Elron Electronics NASDAQ '9.19 '9.25 TAD Tadiran NYSE '18.00 '17.63 CMVT Comverse NASDAQ `13.38 '13.75 LANTF Lannet Data NASDAQ '19,00 '18.50 ISL First Israel Fund NYSE 10.00 1 1.00 5 '0.06 `0.38 '1.00 Source: Allen. °lender, Prudential Securities, West Bloomfield.
