Federation more accurately al-
locate funds to affiliated agen-
cies. Leaders in charge of
dividing the pie will work less off
speculation, they say.
Federation leaders also think
the accelerated Campaign has
enabled solicitors to target new
gifts. New gifts are contributions
from people who have never (or
not recently) pledged. Of the first
200 pledges secured last Sunday,
65 were new gifts. By Wednes-
day, there were more than 120
new contributors to Days of De-
cision.
"I think that new gifts are very
significant for a couple of rea-
sons," Mr. Slatkin said. "No. 1,
they represent fresh monies that
go toward a $27 million goal. And
the second reason is that new
gifts broaden the base of Cam-
paign. You have a shot (in future
years) at a growing Campaign."
Federation staff say a record-
breaking 200 volunteers pitched
in this year during Days of De-
cision. They hailed from 49 tern-
ples, synagogues and other
Jewish organizations.
Many of the volunteers repre-
sented Jewish agencies that re-
ceive allocations from Campaign.
Agency directors say it is in their
best interest to raise money.

The more money Campaign
brings in, the more money their
agencies will be allocated, the
more they can service the com-
munity, they say.
The Jewish Community Cen-
ter, which has cut programs to
mitigate a large deficit, has re-
ceived a $1.24 million Campaign
allocation in recent years. Among
JCC leadership that volunteered
during Days of Decision were Ex-
ecutive Vice President and Di-
rector Morton Plotnick, Associate
Executive Director Leah Ann
Kleinfeldt, and JCC Board Pres-
ident Doug Bloom.
Alan Goodman, executive di-
rector of Jewish Family Service,
also showed up Sunday morning
with members of his staff and
board. Mr. Goodman worries
that government changes to lo-
cal and federal entitlement pro-
grams will reduce public funds
JFS can provide to the needy.

individuals and children lose
(government) entitlements and
can't make it financially, they're
going to turn to us. We use Cam-
paign dollars for all kinds of
things," he said. "From shelters
to food. From transportation to
pharmaceutical needs. You name
