Jewish Lobby Day
Planned In Lansing
JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER
llen Olender is a West
Bloomfield stock broker.
He is not politically active
but describes himself as
politically aware.
The Michigan Jewish Confer-
ence has invited Mr. Olender and
any other interested Jews from
around the state to spend part of
April 26 in Lansing on "Jewish
Community Advocacy Day &
The Official State of Michigan
Holocaust Commemoration.
Following a Yom HaShoah
Holocaust ceremony at the Capi-
tol, participants will spend much
of the afternoon and early
evening discussing political is-
sues with lawmakers.
"Without taking away from
the solemnness ofYom Hashoah,
we felt it was important for Jews
to be in contact with their legis-
lators," said Steven Silverman,
the government relations com-
mittee chair of the Jewish Com-
munity Council. "Yom Hashoah
is a result of what can happen
when Jewish voices are not
heard."
Participants will be briefed on
welfare and school-reform issues
before afternoon meetings with
lawmakers.
Participants will come from
around the state, including
Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Flint,
Petoskey, Saginaw, Midland and
Bay City.
"The cost of silence in today's
political environment is far
greater because of the mood of
the country," Mr. Olender said.
"The Jewish community has to
speak out, especially on certain
views we all tend to agree on,
such as school prayer." ❑
