Hillel Trip Gains Steam RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER Did you ever Tri-Trippin' in Is- rael? About 30 Michigan young adults will give it a shot this spring. Hillel of Metro Detroit, Uni- versity of Michigan Hillel and Michigan State University Hil- lel have collaborated to offer peo- ple ages 18 to 30 a chance to visit places like the Dead Sea, Golan Heights and Yad Vashem. Dubbed "Tri-Trippin'," the May 8 to 18 excursion will coin- cide with the second communi- ty-wide Michigan Miracle Mission, to take place May 7 to 17. The two groups (Mission and Tri-Trippin') will join for Shab- bat services at the Western Wall. The theme of Tri-Trippin' is Jewish identity, said Miriam Starkman, executive director of Hillel of Metro Detroit. The young adults (most of whom come from the local HMD) will meet before the trip to discuss their expectations. Plans are for participants to describe "what Judaism is all about to them," Ms. Starkman says. During the trip, the young adults will river-raft, hike and rappel. They will visit many fa- mous landmarks and become ac- quainted with metro Detroit's Partnership 2000 sister region, the Central Galilee. In accordance with the trip's theme, the young adults also will discuss topics relevant to Jewish - identity. Topics include: Israel /—' versus Diaspora Judaism, how to maintain a Jewish identity in the Diaspora, and legal issues pertaining to who is a Jew. (There are plans to meet with an Israeli supreme court justice.) After the journey, the young adults will reconvene to discuss ways their Jewish identities have changed. Ms. Starkman says the trip, in part, is aimed at gener- ating new local community lead- ers.
