Surnow should rezoning be de-
nied.
Mr. Surnow owns four build-
ings in Lathrup Village which
have produced more than $1 mil-
lion in tax dollars over the years.
The mall could generate as much
as $80,000 in annual taxes for the
village. Akiva provides no tax in-
come for the residents.
"The city does real well by me,"
he said. "What the people don't
realize is that I have helped in
keeping their taxes down."
But the issue to some at the
meeting was more than another
strip mall generating taxes or the
possible increase in traffic.
Citizens, several of whom cried
as they shared their memories of
the stately building, recalled
years when they or someone they
know attended the Annie
Lathrup School.
"You look at this building and
you see dollar signs," Southfield
resident Jeffrey Press told the
Lathrup Village council mem-
bers. "Some of my greatest mem-
ories in my life are from the years
I attended this school. A part of
me is in this school and always
will be."
Others attacked another
Surnow Co. development on
Southfield Road, saying that it
destroyed a landmark to erect a
building for a national copy
chain. Mr. Surnow purchased
another older building, Old
Town Hall Realty, in 1992, lev-
eled it and built a strip mall with
a Kinko's Copy Center as an an-
chor.
A few people suggested the city
buy the building, restore it and
keep it for municipal use. Some
residents spoke of passing a recre-
ation millage to purchase the
building, which they estimated
would cost each household $190
annually.
City Councilman Joel Hersh
said that while the building is
beautiful, buying it is not an op-
tion the city has at this point.
Although the city has a balanced
budget, there is no extra money
to buy, update and maintain the
Akiva building. ❑
